Connor Bedard exits with an injury early in the Chicago Blackhawks-New Jersey Devils game

Blackhawks center Connor Bedard falls to the ice after being checked by Devils defenseman Brendan Smith during the first period Friday in Newark, N.J. The Hawks said the rookie would not return.

NEWARK, N.J. — Connor Bedard left in the first period of Friday night’s game against the New Jersey Devils and didn’t return.

With 9 minutes, 11 seconds left in the period, Brendan Smith slammed into Bedard in the Hawks’ offensive zone, and the rookie spun to the ice. Bedard skated off holding his glove to his face and headed into the tunnel.

At the beginning of the second period, the team issued a medical update on social media saying Bedard would miss the remainder of the game but didn’t offer details.

Hawks linemate Nick Foligno charged at Smith by the Devils’ net and wrestled him to the ice. A scrum ensued by the end wall as Foligno pinned Smith.

Smith was given a roughing penalty while Foligno was tagged with a double-minor for roughing.
