Former Gary deputy mayor Trent McCain, announced on Thursday that he will be returning to the Harvard Law School faculty to teach in its Winter Trial Advocacy Workshop (TAW). McCain served under former Mayor Jerome Prince, who left office last month.

“I am thrilled to return to Harvard Law,” McCain wrote in a statement. “Teaching the nation’s best and brightest aspiring lawyers is so energizing.”

McCain first joined the Harvard Law TAW faculty in 2014 after working with Harvard Law professor and Gary native Ronald S. Sullivan, Jr. on a civil rights case. He left in 2019, when then Mayor-Elect Jerome A. Prince tapped him to be the city’s top lawyer. In 2021, Prince named McCain deputy mayor.

“I am delighted to have the Deputy Mayor return to the teaching faculty of TAW,” Sullivan wrote. “Trent is a superb advocate and equally impressive teacher.”

The TAW is a three week intensive course in trial analysis, skills, and techniques.

Prince was unseated in the city’s May 2 primary by then state Sen. Eddie Melton, who was sworn in as mayor on Dec. 30.

Melton has replaced the deputy mayor role with a chief operating officer, and named Gary school board member Michael Suggs to the role. Melton removed McCain’s wife Akilia from the school board on Dec. 31, replacing her with Glenn Johnson, the former president of the board of Lake Ridge Schools.
