Cedar Lake woman charged with neglect

A Cedar Lake woman is facing felony charges after briefly leaving two babies in her car on May 23 while running into the St. John Target, records show.

Ana Conger, 27, was charged Wednesday with two counts of neglect of a dependent, both Level 6 felonies.

She has not been apprehended and is ordered held on a $2,000 cash bond.

St. John Police were called at 4:16 p.m. — about seven minutes after Conger left her car. She returned by 4:24 p.m. asking officers what they were doing.

They were preparing to break into the car.

Conger said she left the car running with the air conditioning on, but the vehicle must have shut off when she took the keys into the store. She was “in a hurry” and just went inside herself.

The two kids — aged 16 months and two months — were in car seats in the back seat. Paramedics checked them out and said they were fine.

Conger’s husband picked up the kids after police discovered her license was suspended. Officers called the Indiana Department of Child Services to open a case file.
