Illinois woman dies in Borman crash

A driver taking the Calumet Avenue ramp too fast off the Borman Expressway crashed into a concrete barrier and was ejected from the vehicle, suffering fatal injuries Monday morning.

Around 8:40 a.m., an Indiana State Police trooper was dispatched to a single vehicle crash on Interstate 80/94 eastbound on the ramp to Calumet Avenue in Hammond, according to a news release. Investigators determined that Brianna Hawkins, 28, of Westmont, Illinois, was driving a gray 2020 Chevrolet SUV east on the ramp from I-80 to northbound Calumet Avenue when she failed to slow down for the curve. Hawkins’ SUV struck a concrete barrier head-on at a high rate of speed, police said.
