Mendez family desperate journey

A migrant family of five flees Venezuela to escape economic collapse, then travels over 3,000 miles for more than seven weeks to finally reach Chicago. Esperanza Beatriz Mendez and her three children, Fabian Galue Mendez, 19, Yuledy Yisel Mendez, 10, and Pedro Luis Mendez, 9, Fabian’s girlfriend Yolexi Carolina Cubillan, 19, and the family’s dog Milo arrived in the U.S. on July 11 after traveling for 52 days from Venezuela.

Light up the Lake at Navy Pier includes a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, including an ice rink, fire pits for marshmallow roasting, an artisan market and a gallery walk. Enjoy free live musical performances Fridays through Sundays. Plus you can catch a fireworks show on Saturdays at 9 p.m. It runs through Dec. 31 at Navy Pier.
